Auricular Acupuncture
What is Auricular Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese form of healing. The Auricular
Acupuncture method involves putting five needles into each ear.
These needles are
placed in special points in the ear, which link with other parts
of your body.
How does Auricular Acupuncture work?
According to Chinese medicine, the acupuncture needles touch special
points in the ear that allow energy to flow to other parts of the
body. The five points used (the kidney, liver, lungs, nervous system
and spirit) are the best points to help people who are stopping using
alcohol or drugs.
What will it do for me?
It may help you to relax and feel less stress and pain. It can make
you feel you have more energy and feel healthier. It can help you
to get to sleep at night and it may help you feel calmer and better
able to cope.
How is it done?
Very fine needles are placed in the five points in each ear. You are
then asked to sit and relax for 30/40 minutes, and then the needles
are taken out.
Does it hurt?
Most people hardly feel the needles go in. Sometimes there is a small
sting or pinch that only lasts for a second. There should be no pain
or discomfort during the treatment itself.
Is the treatment safe?
Yes, Auricular Acupuncture is very safe. All the people who give the
treatment are trained and registered annually by S.M.A.R.T. UK.
Is there any danger of infection from Auricular Acupuncture?
The needles are sterile and completely safe. After they are used, the
needles are thrown away. New sterile needles, taken from sealed packages
are used for each person.
What if I don’t like needles?
Acupuncture needles are very different from regular, hypodermic needles.
They are much thinner and shorter.
Is there anyone who shouldn’t have Auricular Acupuncture?
If you have any skin rashes or sores on your ears you may not be able to have
acupuncture. You should also inform the person who gives you acupuncture
if you have a heart pacemaker, epilepsy, haemophilia, or if you are, or think
you are, pregnant. This does not mean that you cannot have the treatment,
only that fewer acupuncture needles may be used.
How will I feel after the treatment?
Some people may experience a burst of energy, while others may feel
relaxed or even tired. Sometimes people feel light-headed after the
first treatment. What are acupuncture seeds? These are small seeds
that have been made sterile and can be used in place of needles to
give a much longer treatment. The seeds work like the needles but
are not as strong. While they are in place you can rub them with
your finger to make a pressure on the ear point. The seeds are put
on the ear in the same place as the needles would be and are held
there by tape. The seeds do not break the skin like a needle and
can be left in for a week or more.
